Get ready for the 7th annual Bike Part Art Show!

Dear friends,
The 7th annual Bike Part Art Show is coming in September 2009, and we hope you will loan your time and talent to making this the best year yet! The event is a smashing celebration of bikes, art, and reuse, all in support of Neighborhood Bike Works's youth cycling programs. Every year, Neighborhood Bike Works invites local artists and makers to dig through our old parts bins for bits with artistic potential. Then we put on a show of the amazing results, which are sold in a silent auction to help keep our youth programs going strong. Since 2003, the Bike Part Art Show has resulted in innovative artwork in all sorts of mediums: paintings, sculptures, jewelry, light fixtures, prints, tshirts, furniture, and more. We want your work in the 2009 show! The top three reasons (among many) to participate:
- Bike Art is awesome! We keep used bike parts out of the waste stream by putting them to use as a fun challenge and inspiration to our work.
- Exposure! The Bike Part Art Show has been growing every year, with widespread publicity and high attendance. If you get your work in early, we’ll exhibit it at preview shows around town.
- Help Philadelphia kids! Profits from the auction of our work will help pay for free after school programs and scholarships for summer camps, where kids earn a bike by building one, and in the process learn practical life skills, environmental awareness, fitness and nutrition. Though artists may not have expendable income to donate to such a well-rounded cause, the Bike Part Art Show turns our talent into a direct contribution to making the world a better place for Philadelphia kids.
How to participate: - Tell us you want in (or even that you're mildly interested). Send an e-mail to artshow@neighborhoodbikeworks.org. Please include your phone number, website and address.
- Think about the cool piece (or pieces) of art you want to make from bike parts or about bike culture. If you already have something in your collection, feel free to pull it out for the benefit.
- Get bike parts. Join us for a “Bike Part Raid” at the Bike Church in West Philly (home of Neighborhood Bike Works) to pick out bike parts to use in our pieces. There will be a few opportunities to visit the Bike Church in May and June, exact dates to be announced – watch for an email!
- Drop off your completed project to us by late July to have it included in the preview shows at select locations around the city, or by late August for the regular show dates (exact dates to be announced).
Spread the word! Forward this email, tell all your art-loving and bike-loving friends, or join our facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=57576144196 Want to be more involved? The Bike Part Art Show only gets better when more people help to plan and put it on. We would love to have you along for the ride! If you’re interested in volunteering in any capacity, before or during the show, please reply to this email and tell us a little about yourself. If you have some specific skills or assets you’d like to lend, we’re all ears! Remove yourself from our mailing list: If you’re really not into the Bike Part Art Show, please reply to this email saying so and we won’t send you anything else. Sorry! We look forward to hearing from you! Sincerely, Kate Duncan 2009 Bike Part Art Show coordinator -- Neighborhood Bike Works Increasing opportunities for youth through bicycling http://www.neighborhoodbikeworks.org
